TCHS SV Boys - Zone Champions!

The high school volleyball season has wrapped up. All of our teams played well this season, with our boys reaching championship form and our younger girls team continued to develop! Both of our high school boys and girls teams joined the Deep South Volleyball league for its inaugual season. A huge thank you goes out to our athletes and coaches for their dedication throughout the season. Coaches for the Senior Varsity boys team were Brian Kuyper and Tanya Hoekstra; coahces for the Senior Varsity girls team were Wendy Peters and Tina Schmitt. Our Junior Varisty (JV) boys coaches were Brett McCoy and Jeff Kooiker, while our JV girls coaches were Michelle Vanderwekken and Angela Unger.

Our Lions SV boys team has continued to raise the bar for our young program! The team consisted of grade 10-12 players - some who have been on the SV team for three years. Highlights of the season included three tournament wins - our own Lionheart tournament, the St. Mary’s Double Blue tournament and the Picture Butte Royal Rumble. The SV boys finished second in the league behind Prairie Winds from Coaldale.

Both of our boys and girls teams were able to qualify for 1A zones. The boys entered the tournament being seeded number two behind St. Michael’s from Pincher Creek. We were also ranked #2 in the province behind them as well. The boys defeated St. Michael’s in two straight sets making us the 1A South Zone Boys Volleyball Champions!

After winning zones, our boy’s team were ranked 1st in the province going into the 1A provincial volleyball tournament held in Pincher Creek. Being part of the Provincial Volleyball tournament was an amazing experience for our team as we played against the top teams in the province. After round robin play, we finished third in the 'power' division, which brought us to a game against Ecole Mallaig. We went to three sets with this team but took a loss which brought us to our next game against New Norway. This game also went to three sets and we took the win. We played our final game against the Plamondon “Hawks”, but we took the loss which ended us 6th at the tournament.

Our SV boys team included our 6 grade 12 starters: Sebastian Hoekstra, Adrian Unger, David Wiebe, Jorge Sierra, Johnie Berg and Nicky Unger.

Our SV girls team included 2 grade 12 starters: Haylie Peters and Savanah Schmitt.

We are thankful to our graduating players for the leadership and passion they have shown throughout the season and look forward to to next year!!
