TCHS Celebration of Learning
On Thursday, May 23, Taber Christian High school held its 3rd annual Celebration of Learning event. The event largely celebrated the student achievement in the category of Fine Arts; however this year a celebration of project learning was also added. TCHS students put on a matinee and evening performance.
The program started with Mr. Vriend sharing a little about Habits of Learning and the various ways students have an opportunity to demonstrate this. He also shared some of the projects taken on by our grade 9 students in their "Leadership" class. The idea is that students don't need to wait to be leaders, but can begin that process now! Next our TCHS band played 3 songs: 'Zombie Attack' by Jason Taurins, 'Palette' by Randall Standridge, and 'Let it go' by Johnnie Vinson. The band's precision and improvement was noticeable, particularly during the 6 movements of 'Palette'.
Ms. Gilbert and our resident artist - Mr. George Vandergaast shared both their experience in teaching art and the gratitude for students demonstrating a desire to learn. Three students (Mica, Emily and Savanah) then spoke and reciprocated their gratitude for Mr. Vandergaast's instruction. The students also talked about what the artistic process was like for them and explained some of the motivations behind their work.
Drama was up next, as Act 1 of "Don't say you're Harriet" was shared. This play was found and initiated by students and adapted to fit the event. The plot line was that the well to do Davenport family held a reunion. Many were in attendance including certain unwanted guests! Emily, Priscilla, Eva, Hailey, Eric and Jordan displayed perseverance and expertise in planning for and putting on the drama.
Mr. Gibion Makiwa shared a class project in Math in which students were to measure the surface area of a teacher's car.....using post it notes! On behalf of the Social 20 - 1 class, Luella shared a little about the research process for 'history fair' projects that her class was required to complete. The driving question for her project was: "To what extent was the French Revolution justified in its treatment of the monarchy?" Shortly after, examples of grade 12 passion projects (creating murals in the school, coaching elementary sports teams and volunteering at MCC) were also shared.
To close the program, a student praise team comprised of Savanah, Katelyn, Amanda, Chloe and Alyssa led the audience in singing "Who You Say I Am", "This I Believe (The Creed)" and "Praise". Overall this event was a celebration of student creativity, courage and achievement. A huge thanks to all who contributed!
